Car manufacturer Dacia, member of French group Renault, sold 311,282 cars last year, up 20.5% compared to 2008, but sales in Romania dropped by more than 50%, to 41,862 vehicles. However, the company managed to slightly increase its local market share.
In 2008, Dacia sold 258,372 cars, of which 84,708 in Romania.
"Dacia thus ends the fifth consecutive year when the sales growth pace was expressed in two numbers, which allowed it to go from less than 100,000 cars sold in 2004 to over 300,000 units in 2009, reads a release of the company.
Last year's strong growth in sales was mainly determined by the success in Western Europe, where the Romanian company sold over 200,000 cars.
In Romania, Dacia's market share rose by 1.5 percentage points last year, to 28.9%, in an auto market that was 53.2% down, the release also reads.
By model, Dacia's best-selling car in Romania was the Logan sedan with 25,722 units delivered, followed by Sandero (including the Stepway version), with 6,765 units, and, respectively, Logan MCV, with 6,249 units.
On the utility vehicle market, Dacia delivered 1,588 Logan Vans and 1,538 Logan Pick Up vehicles in Romania.
The company sold 18,000 cars under the national fleet renewal programme.

Dacia export sales reached nearly 270.000 units, 56.1% more compared to the level of about 173,000 vehicles in 2008, when the company's commercial results also included the Logan models produced in Morocco.
Germany became Dacia's main export destination in 2009, with 84,708 units sold, up 231.3% compared to 2008 due to the fleet renewal programme carried out by the German government, which meant a significant discount for the models of the Romanian brand.
The second largest export market was France, with 65,956 units sold (up 51.4%), followed by Italy with 21,739 cars (151.9% more than in 2008).
In 2009, Dacia had a 2.13% share in the German market, 2.5% in the French one and 0.93% in the Italian market. The important export destinations also include Algeria (17,327 units), Turkey (9,727 units) and Spain (9,030 units). In Morocco, where Logan is produced in the SOMACA plant in Casablanca, 18,112 units were sold last year.
