The local telecommunications industry succeeded in coping with the challenges of the financial crisis, by adapting its offer to the customers' demand and by stimulating consumption, which led to an increase in traffic by over 30% on mobile networks, ANCOM President, Cătălin Marinescu, said on Thursday.
"In addition, the operators managed to maintain or even increase their customer portfolio through aggressive offers. In the long run, the increase in the number of customers will constitute as a reserve for the future growth of telecom operators' turnover," said Marinescu, present at the conference "Mediafax talks about Telecom Industry".
According to data from the National Authority  for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM), traffic growth in the mobile phone networks was 33.9% in the first six months, as against the end of 2008, while the number of users decreased by 60,000, to 24.4 million.
As regards fixed telephony, the number of lines increased by 17.8%, to 5.3 million, while voice traffic declined by 16%, as compared to June 2008.
Fixed telephony penetration rate reached 24.7% per 100 inhabitants, up from 3.6% in June 2008. Per 100 households, penetration rate advanced by 3.1 points, to 54.6%.
ANCOM data show that the number of internet connections reached five million by the end of the first half of this year, from 3.9 million in December 2008 and from 3.2 million 12 months ago.
ANCOM is the institution that sets the rules for the communications market in Romania and follows their observance.
The major players in the local market of this industry are Orange Romania, Vodafone Romania, Cosmote Romania, Telemobil (Zapp Mobile) and RCS & RDS, together with Romtelecom and UPC Romania.
