Stolojan: Without foreign financing we will repeat 1997-2000 crisis

In brief

PDL leader Theodor Stolojan said Monday, before the coalition meeting, where a possible loan from IMF will be discussed, that Romania needs foreign financing, because without it, Romania could repeat the crisis of the period 1997-2000.

The former premier claimed that the PSD too is aware that Romania needs foreign financing, suggesting that, in fact, this solution can be avoided only with high costs. "Both the PSD and the PDL know that Romania needs foreign financing, that the level of foreign direct investment dropped to perhaps half, as compared to 2008, so the choice has been known for some time. Do we want a sudden adjustment, as it done in the period 1997-2000? Must remind you when the leu-dollar rate went up from 4,000 lei per dollar, to 8000 and then to 16,000? This is the variant, if we do not resort to external financing", said Stolojan. However, he admitted that there was an option  for Romania not to borrow, but in this case consumption would be drastically reduced. "Romania has two options: one, not to take any external financing and massively reduce productive and unproductive consumption of, because not being able to finance large deficits, one should reduce imports, or take a foreign financing and gain time to carry out the structural reforms", the Euro-parliamentarian concluded.

In his turn, Minister of Transports, Radu Berceanu, claimed that the PSD leaders had nothing to be disturbed by the fact that they had not been informed that a delegation had gone to the IMF last week, showing that the delegation was for information and to see what the atmosphere was like. "I did not know either, and there were no negotiations. A delegation including one  representative of the Ministry of Finance and one of the BNR was sent for some exploratory talks, to see what the atmosphere was like there, not necessarily to hold negotiations. Nobody held any negotiation, they had no mandate, I do not think that there should be so much fuss that two people went to the IMF to see what the  atmosphere was like", said the PLD leader.

Asked wether Mircea Geoană should have been informed about the departure of that team, Berceanu said: „It is important (to know, ed.n.) about the departure of people who have something to do, not about those who have information tasks“.
