Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Romania increased by 31.88% up to 8.645 billion euros in the period January-November 2008 compared to the equivalent period of 2007, covering the current account deficit up to 54%, BNR data reveal.
Thus, in the first 11 months of 2007, foreign direct investment amounted to 6.55 billion euros, covering 43% of the current account deficit, 11 percent less than that related to the period January - November 2008.
Of the foreign direct investment registered in the first 11 months of last year, holdings in capital and reinvested profit represented 51.3% and intra-group credits the remaining 48.7%, the release issued Thursday by the National Bank of Romania (BNR) also shows.
The credits taken by companies located in Romania from their parent companies based abroad have the potential to deepen the current account deficit, as they will be returned on the due dates of payment. However, their share decreased in the first 11 months of 2008, as against the equivalent period in 2007, when the intra-group credits accounted for 54.3% of foreign direct investment.
In comparison to the amount accumulated in the first ten months of last year, foreign direct investment in Romania advanced by about 6% in November. During the interval January-October 2008, the current account deficit was covered up to 56.5% by foreign direct investment, which was 8.16 billion euros.

Current account deficit slowed its growth pace in November

Romania's balance of payments deficit reached 15.995 billion euros after the first 11 months of last year, up 7.8% over the same period in 2007, but below the pace registered at the end of October, data published by the central bank on Thursday reveal.
After the first ten months of this year, the balance of payments deficit had deepened by 10.9%, to 14.437 billion euros.
In the first 11 months of 2007, Romania's current account deficit was 14,833 billion.
Trade deficit (FOB / FOB) - the main source feeding external imbalance - advanced by 6% during the first 11 months of 2008, as compared to the same period in 2007, reaching 16.913 billion euros.
However, the growth pace of the trade deficit tempered, as against the previous months, as imports decreased by 17% in November, and exports by 9%, compared to the same month in 2007, according to statistical data previously published by INS.
